Positively 4th Street - Bob Dylan

"Yes, I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes. You'd know what a drag it is to see you."

Ouch! That's quite the line. Could you imagine saying that to someone? You'd have to be really pissed off or hurt to utter that line. I love it!

Why don't we do it in the road? - The Beatles

"Why don't we do it in the road?"

I fell in love with this line as a 16/17 year old, mostly for the shock value. Try singing it very loudly out in public sometime.

I also have a thing for what are, in most cases, throw away songs like this. Some of the best stuff in my opinion.

I'm So Tired - The Beatles

"And curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid get"

Not really much to this one. I just really like the English slang word "get" or "git". I need to fit that into my vocabulary somehow.

Mr. Jones - Counting Crows

"When everybody loves you, ah son, that's just about as funky as you can be"

The line before this is: "I want to be Bob Dylan, Mr. Jones wishes he was someone just a little more funky". A little too long to include the whole thing, plus I think the last part says it all. The Bob Dylan thing is pretty good too, though. I mean you really wouldn't normally associate Dylan with funky, but Adam does have a point.

Smooth - Santana & Rob Thomas

"I could change my life to better suit your mood"

This one is both loving and pissy all rolled up into one line. Isn't that what relationships are all about? You have to be able to adapt based on situations, moods, etc.

Probably explains why this song is such a huge wedding song.

Crash - Dave Matthews Band

"Hike up your skirt a little more and show your world to me"

It doesn't take a genius to know what he's talking about here. I just love the fact that there are probably tons of people out there that sing along with this song without thinking about what they are saying at all.

Lonely No More - Rob Thomas

"What if I gave all my life to find some way to stand beside you"

Again the romantic in me likes this one. Imagine loving someone so much that you would be willing to wait all your life to be with them.

Marty & Lou - Peter Mulvey

"These days it's all about the monkeys"

This is basically just a nonsense lyric. I enjoy things like this that just don't seem to make any real sense. It makes me smile.

Mysterious Ways - U2

"If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel"

I'm not a religious person and obviously this has religious undertones to it, but to me it speaks to a more fundamental "truth". If you want something, you need to be willing to give something to get it.

Magnificent - U2

"Only love, only love can leave such a mark, but only love, only love can heal such a scar"

The first time I heard this line it just touched me. I have a well hidden (until now) romantic side, so thoughts like this speak to me in that way.

If you really think about this one, it's pretty deep. Love really is the thing that leaves the deepest most painful marks. Think about all of the times when you have been really deeply hurt, and I would bet that love had something to do with it.

But love is also the only thing that can really heal those scars. Thinking back on those same hurts you will find that it was love in some fashion that brought you back and lifted you back up.

The Joker - Steve Miller Band

"Really love your peaches, wanna shake your tree"

I just like the imagery of this line. It's obviously a rather profane lyric describing part of the female anatomy. And I will freely admit that is one of the reasons I like the lyric, but it's said in such a way that doesn't really sound dirty.

Come Together - The Beatles

"Got to be good looking, cause he's so hard to see"

As stated in the introduction to my blog, this is one of my favorite lines of all time. Somehow it says to me that if I'm not being noticed or singled out, it's ok. It's the things that go terribly wrong (or the hideously ugly) that get noticed the most.

Of course that is only partially true. It's really the extremes that get noticed, whether it be good or bad (ugly or beautiful). Though I do believe that the bad gets noticed more than the good in this day and age. We love to sensationalize the horrible things that happen.

So if nobody minds terribly...or even if they do...I will continue to look at this lyric as a positive affirmation.
